When you are really into film, like I am. There are some directors that you just simply have to look into because they are considered the best of all time. Alfred Hitchcock is one of these “top-tier” directors. I have only seen the magnificent film Psycho before this one, but I felt it was time that I start watching this guys movies. I got this movie and I have to admit that this is a superb film. It’s not only a really interesting idea, but its full of  tension, which Hitchcock is the master of. Also its got some brilliant twists and turns. It’s a really clever idea that follows a character who has been in an accident and is confined to a wheelchair in his apartment. He is a photographer and passes the time of day by using his big lens to watch his neighbours going about their daily life’s.

One night he hears a woman scream “don’t!” and a glass break. He gets his lens out and starts watching as a neighbour across the courtyard then starts leaving his apartment several times carrying a sample case. He also observes him cleaning a large knife and a handsaw. He notices hat the guys wife is nowhere to be seen. Thus he is now convinced that the guy has murdered his bedridden wife. He obsesses about it and his girlfriend at first doesn’t seem to share his theories and even questions whether he should be spying on people.

The film is clever in many ways. We are left in the room with the main character for practically the whole movie. So we feel as secluded as he does and also we become voyeurs just like the main character. We simply aren’t sure if the guy has committed murder at all. There is evidence supporting both sides. Did he commit murder or is the main character just a tad paranoid? it’s a really great concept and some of the sequences towards the end are so tense, I was on the edge of my seat. This is a fantastic film that probably deserves 5 out of 5 but I would like to revisit it at some point. Great movie, by a very clever director!

Wow its been ages since writing a review. I have been so busy lately, with college and working two jobs, it’s just hard to get the time to watch any movies, let alone write about them. This is another venture into the David Cronenberg filmography. I have to admit that I didn’t like this film that much to be honest. It’s an interesting idea but I found it incredibly hard to connect to any of the characters. It basically follows a billionaire as he drives across town in his limo to get a haircut. Yes its bizarre and along the way there are a few things that happen that cause his empire to come crashing down around him. There are a few characters that seem interesting but the film is very talkie and the characters are extremely cold.

I have to say that the acting and direction are top notch of course and I was surprised by how good Robert Pattinson was in this movie. On the whole this is a very cerebral kind of movie that is often too cold to connect to. Most of the movie actually takes place in the limo, which helps us feel cut off from the world. This is probably done o purpose as the main character seems cut off from reality, living the high life for too long. Overall its a pretty interesting film but at times feels too talkie and much too cold. I much prefer Cronenberg’s earlier gorier mind bending attempts. This is definitely a change in direction for him.

Every now and then a film comes along that is an abomination to all movies! This is the biggest piece of shit I have ever witnessed  committed to film! Its horribly directed, acted and is a stupid story which makes no sense whatsoever. I refuse to post pictures of this god awful movie. Its such a messy film in every sense of the word. Really boring characters, an all over the place script that just goes nowhere with no pay off. There is not one minute of this film that is even slightly enjoyable. And I am a guy that is really generous with my scoring! I cant even bring myself to write any more about this tiresome shit stinking pile of garbage. I would not wish this movie on my worst enemy. Utter shite that should be destroyed.

Rant over . . .

This was yet another really enjoyable Spaghetti Western. I really do love these movies. The basic story here is that the local stagecoach company are getting sick of their coaches getting robbed. So they hire “special agents” to track down and kill the main guy behind it all called Glenn Kovacs. One of these agents goes and buys a prisoner who is on death row who can help lead him to Kovacs. However the prisoner Dan Barker is quite a cunning guy and escapes a few times. Thus begins a cat and mouse chase.

The other agents that are thrown into the fold are led by actor Fernando Sancho. He has a few guys with him and even though they have stars on their chests, they resort to violence to get things done. Even a nasty torture scene involving hogtieing a guy up with barbed wire.

The film is fast paced, has good action scenes and interesting characters and plot twists. What’s not to like?

Ok, so I wanted a small break from Spaghetti Westerns and thought I would rejoin my David Cronenberg season. This is the first David Cronenberg movie that has been a huge disappointment. Its a period drama with its story revolving around the lives of Carl Jung, Sabina Spielrein and Sigmund Freud. Its got a lot to do with the beginning of Psychoanalysis. Sabina is first brought in to the care of Jung because she is suffering from hysteria which he later finds out is due to sexual repression. He and Freud become friends at first but soon start to disagree with each others theories.Especially when Jung gives into temptation and starts an affair with Sabina.

There’s not a huge amount else to say about it really. It is a rather dull movie that didn’t really capture my interest. Saying that, it is very well acted and directed and is a really nice looking film. The music is excellent and the costumes are fantastic.

I am rather disappointed really, it had a lot going for it but just feels way too “talkie” and baggy if I am honest. This is now my least favourite Cronenberg movie and thats sad. I still think its worth a watch because he is such a good film maker. I will be watching and reviewing “Cosmopolis” tomorrow, all being well.

I have been excited about this one for a while now as it is directed by Lucio Fulci, and I had heard good things about it. I was not let down in the slightest as this is a fantastic Spaghetti Western and I came really close to giving it full 5 stars. It’s wonderfully directed with huge style and some great camera work from Fulci. It also has some really amazing action sequences and a rather nasty bull whip beating. What more could you ask for?

Franco Nero plays Tom Corbett who is called back to his home town by a local friend. However when he gets there he finds that his father’s ranch has been sold and practically the whole town is now owned by the corrupt Scott family. He goes looking for his brother and when he finds him is shocked to learn that his brother is nothing but a drunkard. His brother is played by George Hilton. Man how can you get two better leading men in this genre!

He soon starts to realise that something isn’t quite right because whenever he is involved in any fights or battles the villains never try to kill him or his brother. He decides to go to the Scott ranch and investigate for himself but is set upon by Scotts son with a rather nasty bull whip attack.

The story is really well written with some good plot twists and the acting is top standard, as you would expect from these two stars. The action sequences and the style of the movie are just fantastic. I think on a second watch I might up the star to 5 it was that good a film. Loved it!

So this is one of the more well-known Spaghetti Westerns and falls into the “Zapata” category. This means its story revolves around the Mexican revolution. To be honest it is probably the best in this category, even better than Leones “A Fistful of Dynamite.” The story follows two main characters who become friends and entangled together in a bunch of weapons stealing. El Chuncho Munoz is the leader of the gang and is shown early on robbing a train with his bandits. Riding the train is Bill Tate who is an American. He manages to join the gang when he steps in and helps them rob the train. He and El Chuncho soon become friends and go about stealing weapons for General Elias to help the Mexicans in the revolution.

This is a real emotional story and the characters all have a lot of depth to them and some change and find themselves along the way. This I really liked. It still has some great action sequences and some top music but its the journey of the characters that is most fascinating.

The acting in this film is marvellous and I couldn’t help but really like El Chuncho, who grows so much as the story progresses. There are some twists in this film so I don’t want to spoil anything for those that haven’t seen this film. This is a must see Spaghetti and one that definitely needs to be re watched.

So you have interesting characters, great direction, great story and top action. What else could you ask for from this genre?
